The Japanese National Population Census (国勢調査 - Kokusei Chōsa) is the most important statistical survey conducted by the Japanese Government every 5 years to collect basic data on population and households. The next survey will take place in October 2025.
This is a legal obligation for everyone living in Japan at the time of the survey, including foreigners, regardless of residency status or nationality. Your cooperation is extremely important for the Government to develop appropriate policies, from infrastructure, healthcare, social welfare to education and disaster prevention.
Information Privacy: Your personal data will be strictly confidential and used only for statistical purposes, not for any other purposes such as immigration management, taxes, or police investigations.
From around the end of September 2025, you may have received an envelope like this, which is the census form, and you are required to complete it, with the deadline being October 8, 2025.
How to Fill Out the 2025 Census Form
There are 2 ways: fill out the paper form and mail it, or complete it online. However, in this day and age, doing it online is much more convenient and easier, so in this article, I'll guide you on how to do it online quickly and efficiently.
To respond online, you only need this sheet of paper. Flip to the back, and you'll see the login information and QR code.
Step 1: Log in to the Website
After scanning the QR code on the back of the paper with your phone, or accessing from a computer via the link on the notice, you'll reach the homepage. Here, you can switch to the Vietnamese interface in the menu at the top right.
If you scan the QR code from your phone, the login information will be auto-filled, which is very convenient. Select the Login button to log in.
Step 2: Answer the Survey Questions
After logging in, on the next screen, scroll down and select the start button.
There will be 16 questions, and you need to answer all of them in order.
The questions will revolve around personal information such as:
Number of people in your household.
Full name, gender, date of birth, family relationship.
Marital status.
Nationality.
Occupation, detailed content of current job.
Information about the company where you work or the school where you study.
Step 3: Submit Your Answers
After completing the 16 questions, there will be a screen for you to enter contact information including phone number and address. Enter the accurate information and review it once more on the confirmation screen, then select the continue button.
Next will be the screen asking you to enter a password. This password is for household members to view and edit the responses.
After entering and confirming the password, select the OK button to submit the information. When the completion notification screen appears, it means you're done.
Beware of Scams Impersonating the Census
Official census enumerators always carry an Enumerator Card (調査員証) with a photo and are appointed by the Statistics Bureau.
Absolutely NO questions about money, bank accounts, credit card numbers, or My Number personal identification numbers.

In summary, the simplest and safest way to complete the 国勢調査 is: Wait to receive the materials at the end of September, then access the official website, select Vietnamese, and complete the online response before the deadline of October 8, 2025.
