In recent years, the number of Vietnamese international students and technical interns facing legal issues in Japan, including law violations and absconding, has increased significantly. It's important to note that absconding from your training facility or workplace can happen whether your visa is still valid or has expired.
In some cases, international students and technical interns choose to abscond even when their visa is still valid. However, this doesn't mean they're not breaking Japanese law. In fact, even if the visa is still valid, absconding from your place of study or work is considered illegal and can lead to your visa being invalidated.
If you abscond and your school (for international students) or company (for technical interns) doesn't report it to the immigration authorities, your visa might temporarily remain valid, meaning you can still travel freely, go on trips, or return home to visit family. However, once they report your status, your visa—even if it has 2-3 years left—will be invalidated.
How to Check If Your Visa Is Still Valid or Has Been Revoked
Checking is quick and simple.
First, go to the following website. It's a government site, so it's safe and you don't have to worry about your personal information being stolen.
On the screen that appears, you'll enter the required information:
(1)在留カード等番号: Enter your residence card number (alien registration card), the number is on the top right of the card
(2)在留カード等有効期間: Enter the expiration date of the card; if the day or month is a single digit, add a 0 in front. For example, if the expiration date on the card is 2012年7月9日, enter 2012年07月09日
The third field is for entering the text to confirm
After entering the information, click the 問合せ button to see the results
And here's the result:
You just need to pay attention to the last line, which is 問合せ結果.
失効していません: Your visa is still valid, so you can rest easy.
この在留カード等番号は有効ではありません: Your visa has been invalidated, sorry to hear that.
I hope this information helps you check your visa status in Japan on your own, avoiding any unnecessary troubles.
